The Victoria day long weekend is typically observed as the first long weekend of summer and the start of camping season for most. As the the weekend approaches, be sure to start this season off on the right track by “Being AdventureSmart”!
What does “Being AdventureSmart” mean? We’re glad you asked! It means that no matter what outdoor activity you and or your loved ones take part in this weekend, ensure you follow the 3Ts (Trip Planning, Training & Taking the Essentials)!
Trip Planning – Plan your outdoor adventure including your route (including a backup!) and check the weather. Prior to heading out on your adventure, be sure to complete a Trip Plan and leave it with a responsible adult. Make sure you include important information like, who is going, what equipment you are taking, when you are starting and when you plan to return, where your adventure is going to take place and how you will be getting to your starting and ending point (type and color of vehicle, boat, tent, etc.).
Training – Obtain the Knowledge and skills you need before heading out. Knowing and Know and stay within your limits.
Taking the Essential – Equip yourself with the right equipment to handle any situation you might find yourself in. Knowing how to use a specific essentials is just as important as carrying it with you. Remember that essentials are sports and season specific, here is a list of essentials for any outdoor activity:
- Fire making kit
- Whistle or mirror
- Extra food and water
- Extra clothing
- Navigational / communication aids
- First aid kit
- Emergency shelter
- Pocket knife
- Sun protection
