Canada’s endless, beautiful coastlines and millions of lakes offer recreational boaters a lifetime of adventure on the water. From simple one-day outings to elaborate multi-day excursions, from fishing to cruising, Canadian waters are world-class!

With any outdoor activity, there’s always an element of risk, and boating is no exception. Ensure that you’re prepared before you venture out:

  • Note: September 2009 is the deadline for the requirement of the Pleasure Craft Operator Card
  • Take a boating safety course such as the Lifesaving Society’s Boat Operator Accredited Training (BOAT).
  • Keep your marine VHF radio on channel 16 and use it to issue a distress message. Know where you are at all times.
  • Check the weather and your fuel supply before you leave.
  • Wear a proper-fitting lifejacket or PFD.
  • Ensure that all equipment, whether lifesaving or navigation, is in good working order.
  • Never drink and drive your boat.
  • Look before you act, maintain moderate speeds, and drive with extreme caution and proper lights after dark. Simply, please boat responsibly.

  • Transport Canada, the Canadian Coast Guard, Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary and other boating and water safety organizations provide "FREE" safety checks of your boat at your invitation.  A qualified professional will board your boat and review with you the safety equipment required by law.  Other equipment will be inspected and any deficiencies identified. There are no penalties for missing equipment and no limit to the number of checks you can request. Arranging for a check every spring is a good idea.
