Code of Responsibility

The Code of Responsibility for Outdoors represents a code of conduct for each of us who ventures outdoors. It has been developed over the years by the Search and Rescue (SAR) community and is being promoted by AdventureSmart as part of its mandate to educate the public and reduce SAR incidents.

The Code consists of a simple set of ways of thinking and behaving to help us all to be safer in the outdoors and minimize the chance of getting lost or injured. It also helps us realize that mishaps can happen to anyone. The responsible outdoor adventurer needs to know what to do if the unforeseen does happen.

The Code promotes taking responsibility for our actions into our own hands, to reduce the number and severity of incidents and to make rescue easier if one is to occur. The Code consists of:
