Search and Rescue educates adventurers

Campbell River's Search and Rescue volunteers are busier than ever but they're hoping a new Adventure Smart program will make their jobs a little easier.

Search and rescue incidents across B.C. have increased 150 per cent in the last 15 years.

Already this year in Campbell River, search and rescue has responded to 10 incidents, a 38 per cent increase over 2004.

"If that continues for the rest of 2005, we are in for a very busy year," said search and rescue manager Grant Cromer in a news release.

To help cut down on the number of search and rescue missions, as well as to assist the public in enjoying the outdoors in a safe manner, the Provincial Emergency Plan is launching Adventure Smart for young people and adults.

It's a program designed to provide the public with the educational resources to reduce the risk of becoming lost, injury and death. Members of Campbell River Search and Rescue will help deliver that information through courses or pamphlets, and they are welcoming the opportunity to do so.

"Any information on back-country safety and education is a positive thing," said Cromer. "This new program will one day give someone the tools to prevent themselves from being lost or help them survive in an emergency situation."
